About me
Specialised in cultural, women’s and sex history of the twentieth century.

I describe myself as a historical maker. That means I am able to contribute to anything in which (academic) history is involved. I studied History at the University of Groningen, where I earned my MA in History and Heritage Consultancy. I recently got started with research work and began my career as a freelancer. As a historical researcher and writer, I translate (archive) sources into clear, accessible texts, so that knowledge of the past is preserved in the present.
I believe that history is the essence of everything. If you start describing something, you start at the beginning: its history. That shows how important the stories behind events, concepts and ideas are. Discovering, describing and preserving those stories is what I do. I often tell people that I actually have one fairly simple skill: I can put your thoughts into clear words. As a historical researcher and writer, I translate (archive) sources into clear, accessible texts, so that knowledge of the past is preserved in the present.
I am a detail-oriented, fluent writer, and I consider clear communication a core value in any collaboration, which makes me easy to reach. So, do you need a researcher, a writer, or your personal translator? Then I am your ideal freelancer. Does this appeal to you? Then get in touch with me.

Short biography
Justus Luijckx (1999) is a historical researcher and writer from Groningen. He writes about what history left unspoken, and about the two reasons why: either something was so self-evident that nobody wrote it down, or it was taboo. Culture and custom on the one hand; sex, gender and sexuality on the other. At that border a society becomes most clearly visible, and at the local level most clearly of all.
His biggest ongoing assignment is the study of the Groningen resistance fighter Anda Kerkhoven, which he carries out for the DeFacto Cultuurfonds in collaboration with the University of Groningen and the Oorlogs- en Verzetscentrum Groningen. For this he works regularly in the Centraal Archief Bijzondere Rechtspleging, both digitally and in the reading room, and supplements the file research with oral history. Every month he publishes personal essays on Ik schreef.
He studied history at the University of Groningen, where he earned his MA in History and Heritage Consultancy.
Justus lays all kinds of sources side by side: the digitised file, the paper that has not been scanned yet, and the people who remember it. That last one has an expiry date, and that often determines the order in which he approaches a project.
Available for individuals, funds, heritage institutions, municipalities and companies: commissioned archival research, interviews, books, articles or exhibition texts. He does the research himself, from the first box to the last sentence. The writing is personal and made by a human, not by a computer.

Besides history, I also write for myself. The thoughts I have are put on paper. A collection of essays and stories, but above all thoughts and concepts. Raw. Unedited. But honest.
Together we can Write history.
